Mistakes people make when setting up a Routine
Every life master tells you to set up a routine. Consistency does win.
But as someone who literally hates repetition more than anything else on the planet, I found that a cut and dry, exact routine crushes my soul. I don’t want to do the same things, in the same order every day. I purposely position my life so that it’s filled with variety.
And on that note, in doing so, I pinpointed the small habits that I know brought the productivity I wanted, with variety. Eventually, I came to a position where, even though my routine is not the same every day, I find it easy and natural to fall into the tasks I know are good for me: stretching, reading, writing.
Here is what to avoid, when setting up a routine.
Slip n Slide: If you slip up once, don’t let it take you out of the routine.
Getting up for snacks & Randomness. Don’t get up, dude. Stay put. Finish the damn thing. I do all kinds of bets like: “Ok I’m finishing this task before I get another cup of coffee or snack!!” It helps.
Not reflecting or prioritizing: Weave it into your daily routine to look over how this day went. Create your own framework or method for prioritizing, and if you use it every day for just 7 minutes, you can refine your own framework and customize it to your life.
Underestimating how long things will take. Don’t make “being behind schedule” a way of life. Close the damn thing, wherever it’s at. Go to the next thing on your taks list. Keep momentum.
Panicking & Whining: Even if you hate everything on your task list that day, finish one thing, and you know you’ll feel good.
