“I Hate Work”

We are living in a culture where it’s fun to laugh at not wanting to work hard

But what if we found a way to enjoy our job?

This joke that “working hard” is punishment is making us hate work. When really, we actually enjoy achieving something a bit out of our reach. There is plenty of work in this world that would let us explore imagination and the abilities we love.

We shouldn’t only feel satisfied after finishing something we didn’t like. “Work” can truly be the highlight of our life and day; there is no stronger high than that of getting excited to dig into something you care about, and the satisfaction of getting it right.

The real hard work is in finding the work you do like.

Of course, even at your dream job, there will be many tasks you find mundane, tedious or just plain annoying as fuck. Here are some tips:

  1. Remind yourself what the main purpose of everything you’re doing, and who it is serving. Look at the small steps of your task list, and try to link them to the bigger picture

  2. Measure man. Measure how long each lil’ thing took you, and where the time was wasted. Which random dilly dallying got you out of the zone? Which tasks and habit are actually worth your while?

  3. Don’t work out of fear and guilt

  4. Putting a timer for 20 minutes of writing or venting, and letting your brain indulge in whatever the hell is actually on your mind

  5. If you’re in that mood where you hate the world completely, think of 3 things you kind of enjoy with work (or 3 easy things) and get them done.

  6. Put it out. If you’re tired of a task staying on your task list too many days, promise you’ll show it to someone in 45 minutes or so

  7. Just start talking to people !! If you are frustrated with everything you’re doing, try to meet up with a classmate or teammate. Share where you’re at, and learn their style of learning and completing work.
