Starting Deep Conversations

Oftentimes, your friends might know you as the hilarious goof, the strong one, the one who is rarely wrong, or whatever your trademark is in that friend group. But we’ve all experienced that moment where we got a little too senti, a little too “out there” for everyone else we were talking to. And in that moment, we realize that once people have associated you with a particular trait, it is hard to have deep conversations with them. We hesitate to ask bigger questions because we feel we have a reputation to maintain.

But questions about life and existence, conversations about the complex things happening inside of us, not only tightens the bond with our friends, it brings us new perspectives to see within ourselves, and enjoy our time in this world.

You can’t always force deep conversation with people. But, once in a while, sprinkle in an interesting, “contemplative” topic for your friends. Even straight up tell them, hey guys, I feel like getting deep!!

Here are some conversation starters, to open up with your friends:

  • Are we born with our personalities, or do we have control over the type of person we become?

  • Is there such a thing as an ideal government? What does it look like?

  • Would the world make progress, if technology didn’t exist?

  • Is the romantic love we imagine, truly what’s natural for us? Or are they influenced by society and the media's perception of it?

  • Why do we universally find things like oceans and mountains beautiful?

  • How much do we actually think about one another?

  • What is the source of your self-worth? And does this self-worth determine your purpose in life?

  • Does every person experience the same level of happiness, at least once in their lifetime?

  • Should we stop ourselves from thinking mean things about other people? Or is there a reason we have certain thoughts?

  • How much control do we have over our thoughts, and should we try to control them?

You don’t have to feel so lame, since it’s not really your question! Try them out and let me know how it went.

Your friends are probably more deep thinkers than you realize!
